# Present

"Present" (Beta) is where you prepare what a room sees, and the button that opens it. Press
"Present" and a room screen opens in a new tab. dembrane starts reading the project's
conversations and shows the room short phrases from them. Those phrases are called popcorn.

"Present" is in the sidebar of every project. There is no separate "Popcorn" page: popcorn is
the first outcome of a presentation.

A project has one presentation. It is made the first time someone who can edit the project
opens "Present".

## Outcomes: what a presentation can show

"Outcomes" are the parts of a presentation. There are four, and a presentation can hold
nothing else.

| Outcome | In the product's words | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| "Popcorn" | "Short phrases from the conversations" | Always on. The screen opens here. |
| "Tensions" | "Different perspectives and trade-offs" | A switch. |
| "Map" | "Ideas and how they connect" | A switch. It is the audience's view of the [argument map](./argument-map.md). |
| "Stakeholders" | "People, groups and what matters to them" | A switch. |

A new presentation starts with "Popcorn" only. You switch the others on in the "Outcomes"
tab of the editor.

On the room screen, popcorn is described as "moments of recognition from the conversations".
One phrase is at most 21 words or 140 characters. The screen carries this note:

> popcorn is optimised for latency, not accuracy. popcorns in “quotes” are the room's words,
> word for word; the rest paraphrase what was said.

So only a phrase in quotation marks is word for word.

A tension shows two sides that answer one question in opposite directions, with a line "To
resolve:". "Tensions" and "Stakeholders" come from the same reads as popcorn.

## Start presenting

A read is one pass of popcorn over the project's conversations. "Live" means dembrane reads
on its own, at an interval.

| You want | Do this | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| To show the room now | Press "Present". | The room screen opens in a new tab. Unless the project is already live or booked, popcorn goes live for 8 hours. |
| Another length | Open the arrow beside "Present" ("More ways to present") and choose "Stay live for": "1 hour", "8 hours" or "24 hours". | Before you are live, this sets the length that "Present" and "Book" use. While you are live, you go live again for that long from now. |
| Results by a set time | In the same menu, give a time under "Ready by" and press "Book". | The first read starts 15 minutes before that time. |
| To stop | In the same menu, press "Stop live" while live, or "Cancel" while booked. | Reading on an interval ends, or the booking is dropped. |

More about "Ready by":

- It takes a time of day and means the next time the clock shows it: today, or tomorrow when
  that time has already passed.
- The menu says "Starts at {time}, 15 minutes early", or "Starts now" when less than 15
  minutes remain.
- The status line shows "Popcorn ready by {time}" and "starts {time}".
- When the booked read is in, everyone who can open the project gets the Inbox notification
"Your results are ready to review": "Take a few minutes to look through them before you
  present."

While you are live:

- dembrane reads every 2 minutes. A read gathers every conversation and works on the ones
that changed since the last read.
- The status line shows "Live until {time}".
- Live ends at that time, when you press "Stop live", or after three failed reads in a row.

When a conversation finishes, one read is booked 60 seconds later. This also happens when
you are not live. The status then shows "Read after {name} finished".

There is no minimum number of conversations or words.

## Prepare the presentation

The page has three parts: the "Audience preview", the "Presentation editor" and "Review
results". In the preview, "Not on the room screen yet" marks what the room has not seen.

The editor has a "Presentation title" and six tabs.

| Tab | What you set |
|---|---|
| "Intro" | "Show introduction": a title and subtitle before the countdown. "Show a frame": a blue bar across the top of every tab, with your text and a link back to the opening. |
| "Data policy" | "Show a disclosure": a screen before the countdown that says what the room is looking at. "Show what happens to the data": a screen that explains, step by step, what happens to the recordings. "Names on the legend": off numbers the conversations, on shows the name typed on the phone, which may be a person's. |
| "Host guide" | "Show the host guide": a screen with the code to take part and the steps from your host guide. "Edit the host guide" opens the guide. |
| "Outcomes" | The switches for "Tensions", "Map" and "Stakeholders". |
| "Language" | The language of the screen and of the results. See below. |
| "Appearance" | "QR code": the link to add a voice, in the corner of the stage. The "made with dembrane" mark. |

The "made with dembrane" mark stays on the screen unless the workspace is on the Changemaker
plan or higher. Then you can switch it off.

### Languages

The screen and the results work in eight languages: English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish,
Italian, Ukrainian and Czech.

- A new presentation has "Follow project language" ticked.
- Untick it to choose a "Screen language" ("The words around the results: tabs, buttons and
explanations.") and a language for "Results": "Original language" or "Translate to
  {name}".
- Results show in the language people spoke. A translation covers "every popcorn, quote,
tension and stakeholder for this presentation; the originals are kept."
- "Popcorn also in" adds up to three more languages: "Each popcorn pops once per language:
the original first, then these in random order."
- Translation happens during a read. Choosing a new language starts a read that only
translates. Progress shows as "Translating: {n} of {total} into {language}".

### Review results

"Review results" lists the findings in the presentation: "Change the wording, read the
evidence, or keep a finding out of this presentation. Shared results stay available in
Analysis."

For each finding you can:

- press "Edit" to change the wording;
- press "Hide from this presentation", and later "Show again". Hiding asks "Why not in this
  presentation?";
- open "History / details";
- rate it "Good finding" or "Not a good finding" and "Leave feedback".

"Hide from this presentation" affects this presentation only. An edit, or "Withdraw from the
analysis", changes the finding for the whole project. See [Analysis](./analysis.md).

"Use latest results" appears when the analysis has newer results than the presentation
shows. "Open in Analysis" opens the Analysis page.

### Showing your changes to the room

- With nobody watching, changes show at once: "Changes show on the room screen as you make
  them."
- While someone may be watching, changes wait. The page says "The room screen is open, so
changes wait until you show them.", "You’re live, so changes wait until you show them." or
"The public page is on, so changes wait until you show them." The status line counts "#
changes not shown yet". Press "Show them".
- The page only notices a room screen that was opened in the same browser. It does not
notice a screen on another computer. Being live, or having "Public page" on, makes changes
  wait in every case.
- New results reach an open screen on their own. Nobody has to reload it.

## What the audience sees

1. The opening pages you switched on: "Introduction", "Data policy" and "Take part".
2. The button "Start popcorn →" on the last opening page. It starts the popcorn slides, with
   a countdown.
3. A waiting stage until the first phrase arrives. The screen says where things are, for
example "waiting for the first conversation", "reading the conversations…" or "the first
popcorn is taking longer than usual".
4. The outcomes you chose, as tabs: "Popcorn", "Tensions", "Map" and "Stakeholders". A tab
without results says "The results are being prepared."

> [!NOTE]
> "Start popcorn →", the waiting stage and the page about the data are all on the audience's
> screen. They are not steps a host takes in the dashboard. A host presses "Present" or books
> a time with "Ready by".

Also on the screen:

- The page about the data is titled "Here's what happens to your data, step by step" and has
three steps: scan, talk and understand. Its words follow the project's anonymisation
setting and legal basis, not your typing.
- Controls for play and pause, previous and next slide, fullscreen, and a light or dark
  screen.
- The map, with the views "Cluster map" and "Argument tree". It can show a fact-check
  result.

The audience never gets:

- transcripts;
- a finding you hid from the presentation or withdrew from the analysis;
- the edit history of a finding, or fact-check buttons;
- links from a quote back into the workspace;
- a language control of its own.

On the waiting stage, a signed-in host who can edit the project also sees "Analyse now". It
starts one read. The public page never shows it.

## The room screen and the public page

| | Room screen | Public page |
|---|---|---|
| How you open it | Press "Present". | Press "Share" and switch "Public page" on. |
| Who can see it | Signed-in people with access to the project. | "Anyone with the link can watch. No login, and no transcripts." |
| What it needs | No paid plan. | The Innovator plan or higher, and a workspace admin to switch it on. |

With "Public page" on, "Share" offers a QR code, "Copy link", "Open link", "Download QR
code", "Copy embed code" and "Download event printouts".

The public link works only while the switch is on. Switching it off and on again gives a new
link. The old link stays closed and shows "This presentation is not available." and "Its
link may have been switched off. Ask the host."

## Who can do what

| Action | Who | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Open "Present" and the room screen | Admins, members, external collaborators and observers | None |
| Edit the presentation, go live, book a time, review results, show changes | Admins, members and external collaborators | None |
| Switch "Public page" on | Admins | Innovator or higher |
| Take the "made with dembrane" mark off the screen | Anyone who can edit the presentation | Changemaker or higher |

Someone who cannot edit sees the preview and the "Present" button only. If no presentation
exists yet, they read "The host hasn’t prepared a presentation yet."
