Present & Map for hosts
On this page
“Present” is where you prepare what the room sees and open the screen for it. “Map” is where you explore the arguments people made. Both are marked Beta. Together they replace the old library of views and aspects, which no longer exists.
| You want to… | Use |
|---|---|
| Show a room what people are saying while the session runs | “Present” |
| Have results ready at a set time | “Ready by”, beside “Present” |
| Check or reword a result before anyone sees it | “Review results”, on the “Present” page |
| Share results with people who have no login | “Public page”, under “Share” |
| Explore every argument in the project | “Map” |
Present to a room#
- Open your project and choose “Present” in the sidebar. The presentation is made the first time someone who can edit the project opens this page.
- In the “Presentation editor”, open “Outcomes” and choose what your audience can explore.
- Press “Present”. The room screen opens in a new tab and popcorn goes live. It stays live for 8 hours unless you chose another time. A project that is already live or booked stays as it is.
- Put that tab on the big screen and click through its opening pages. The last one has the button “Start popcorn →”. It starts the slides after a countdown.
“Start popcorn →” and the waiting stage that follows are on the room screen. They are not steps in the dashboard.
The outcomes you can show:
| Outcome | What the room sees |
|---|---|
| “Popcorn” | Short phrases from the conversations. Always on, so the room has something to read while the rest gets ready. |
| “Tensions” | Different perspectives and trade-offs: two sides of one question, and what there is to resolve. |
| “Map” | The argument map of the project. |
| “Stakeholders” | People, groups and what matters to them. |
popcorn is built for speed, not accuracy. A phrase in quotation marks is what someone said, word for word. The others paraphrase.
Go live, or book a start#
While popcorn is live it reads the project’s conversations every 2 minutes and works on the ones that changed. The status line shows it, for example “Live until 17:00”.
The arrow beside “Present” gives you more ways to present:
- “Stay live for”: “1 hour”, “8 hours” or “24 hours”.
- “Ready by”, while you are not live yet: give the time you want results by and press “Book”. The first read starts 15 minutes before that time. A time that has already passed today means tomorrow. “Cancel” drops the booking.
- “Stop live”, while you are live, ends the live reads.
When a booked read is in, everyone who can open the project gets an “Inbox” notification: “Your results are ready to review”.
Tip
Plenary at 15:00? Book "Ready by" 15:00. The first read starts at 14:45, so you can look through the results before you put them on the screen.
Two more things happen on their own. Each time a conversation finishes, one read follows about a minute later, live or not. And live ends by itself after three failed reads in a row.
Review results before they show#
Below the editor, “Review results” lists the findings in your presentation. For each one:
- “Edit” rewords it. You say what you changed (“A typo”, “Clearer words, same meaning” or “The meaning”) and why.
- “Hide from this presentation” keeps it off this presentation only. “Show again” brings it back.
- “Withdraw” takes it out of the analysis altogether, and off the map. It asks why, in one sentence. “Undo withdrawal” brings it back.
- “History / details” shows each change with who made it, when and why. “Use this wording” restores an earlier text.
The audience never sees the history, and never sees a finding you hid or withdrew.
When newer results exist, “Use latest results” brings them into the presentation. “Open in Analysis” opens the Analysis page, which lists every finding of the project with its evidence.
When do your changes reach the screen?
- Nobody is watching: “Changes show on the room screen as you make them.”
- You are live, the public page is on, or the room screen is open: changes wait until you press “Show them”. The “Audience preview” marks them “Not on the room screen yet”.
The page notices an open room screen only when it was opened in the same browser. A screen on another computer is not noticed. While you are live or the public page is on, changes always wait. New results from a read reach an open screen without your help.
The room screen#
- It starts with the opening pages you switched on (“Introduction”, “Data policy”, “Take part”), then shows one tab per outcome.
- Before the first phrase it waits, with a line such as “waiting for the first conversation” or “reading the conversations…”. A signed-in host who can edit the project also sees “Analyse now” there, which starts one read.
- It has controls for play and pause, previous and next slide, fullscreen, and a light or dark screen.
- It never shows transcripts.
- It needs a browser that is signed in to dembrane with access to the project. An account is signed in on one browser at a time. For people without a login, use the public page.
You set the screen up in the tabs of the “Presentation editor”:
| Tab | What you set |
|---|---|
| “Intro” and “Data policy” | “Presentation title”, “Show introduction”, “Show a disclosure”, “Show a frame” and “Show what happens to the data” |
| “Host guide” | “Show the host guide”: a screen with the code to take part and the steps from your host guide |
| “Outcomes” | Which outcomes the audience can explore |
| “Language” | “Follow project language”, or your own “Screen language” and a translation of the results. “Popcorn also in” adds up to three more languages |
| “Appearance” | “Names on the legend”, the “QR code” to add a voice, and the “made with dembrane” mark |
“Names on the legend” is off to start with and numbers the conversations. Switched on, it shows the name typed on the phone, which can be a person’s name. Taking the “made with dembrane” mark off needs the Changemaker plan.
The public page#
Press “Share” and switch on “Public page”: “Anyone with the link can watch. No login, and no transcripts.”
- You need the “Admin” role, and the workspace needs the Innovator plan or higher.
- With the switch on you get a QR code, “Copy link”, “Open link”, “Download QR code”, “Copy embed code” and “Download event printouts”.
- The link works only while the switch is on. Switching off and on again gives a new link, and the old one stays closed. A closed link shows “This presentation is not available.”
Read the Map#
The map reads the project’s transcripts, finds the arguments people make and places related arguments close together.
- Choose “Map” in the sidebar and press “Generate map”. There is nothing to fill in. It reads every conversation that has a transcript.
- Wait while it reads. You can leave the page. The sidebar entry shows “Ready” when the map is done.
- Click a point. “Spotlight” shows the argument with its “Quotes” and “Connections”. Each quote links to the conversation it came from.
How to read it:
- Each point is one argument: a short statement with one to five word-for-word quotes. The header counts them, for example “42 arguments from 12 conversations”.
- There are two views of the same arguments, “Cluster map” and “Argument tree”. Show them “One at a time” or “Side by side”.
- “Color nodes by” colours the points by conversation (the default), tag, valence or factual status. Valence is “Positive”, “Negative”, “Neutral” or “Not assessed”.
- “Filter” narrows the map by tag or by conversation.
- Rest the cursor on a group of three or more points until the circle closes. The cluster is saved and a language model gives it a title. Saved clusters also show on the room screen and the public page.
Claims and opinions:
- A claim is a statement about the world that evidence could back up or contradict. Anything else (a stance, a preference, a personal story) is labelled “Opinion”.
- “Fact-check this claim” in “Spotlight” has a language model search the web. The result is “Likely true”, “Likely false”, “Contested” or “Inconclusive”, with a written justification and links to its sources. Read the sources before you repeat a result.
- Opinions are not fact-checked.
Good to know:
- There is one map per project. “Regenerate” makes it again. If that fails, you keep the previous map.
- A map is also made on its own when a presentation includes the “Map” outcome and the project has none yet.
- The “Map” page has no edit controls. Reword or withdraw a finding under “Review results” on “Present”, and the map follows.
- Tensions are not drawn on the “Map” page. They are the “Tensions” outcome of a presentation.
Who can do what#
| Action | Role |
|---|---|
| Open “Present”, the room screen and “Map” | Everyone on the workspace except “Billing” |
| Edit a presentation, go live, review results, generate a map, fact-check | “Admin”, “Member”, “External” |
| Switch on “Public page” for a presentation | “Admin”, on the Innovator plan or higher |
Apart from the public page and the “made with dembrane” mark, none of this needs a paid plan.
